55,867 layoffs, AI cited in 5: Saudi Pulse, Oct 19

By Samy Aloulou — analyste de l'observatoire · Published October 19, 2026

Six companies reported 55,867 job cuts between 12 and 18 October 2026, and only 3,000 of them, at Intuit, were explicitly attributed to AI by the company itself. Oracle, Amazon, Meta and Kroger cited AI among other factors. Dell's 11,000 cuts carry our 'suspected' label: automation is the evident driver, but the company has not said so. The headlines skip that gap. Oracle (21,000) and Amazon (17,267) account for most of the week's volume, yet neither named AI as the direct cause. The week's cuts fall in technology and, through Kroger, in retail. Our tracker rates the trend as up on the previous week. No Gulf automation event or Saudi policy update was reported this week. For Saudi readers, the question is exposure. In our sector data, the closest counterparts are ICT and Wholesale & Retail Trade. Both are among the five most AI-exposed of the 20 sectors we track, and both face high Nitaqat (Saudization quota) pressure. You can follow the series across [all Pulse editions](/pulse).

Which companies cut jobs this week, and how did each describe AI's role?

Intuit's 17% workforce reduction is the week's only case labelled 'direct': the company tied it to a deeper investment in AI (The Daily Star, 17 October). Oracle's reduction was described as part of a restructuring partly driven by AI adoption across its operations (The Daily Star, 18 October).

| Company | Country | Jobs cut | AI role | Date | Source | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | Oracle | US | 21,000 | contributing | 18 Oct | The Daily Star | | Intuit | US | 3,000 | direct | 17 Oct | The Daily Star | | Meta | US | 600 | contributing | 17 Oct | Reuters via Capital.com | | Kroger | US | 3,000 | contributing | 12 Oct | Reuters via Capital.com | | Amazon | US | 17,267 | contributing | 12 Oct | Free Press Journal | | Dell | US | 11,000 | suspected | 12 Oct | Free Press Journal | | Total | | 55,867 | | | |

The total counts announced cuts. It does not count jobs replaced by AI.

Is AI taking a larger share of tech layoffs in 2026?

Yes. Layoffs.fyi attributes 36% of tracked 2026 technology layoffs to AI, against 16% in 2025 (reported 18 October). By its count, more than 119,800 technology employees have been laid off across 196 firms in 2026 (The Daily Star). Our own year-to-date count of global tech layoffs is 127,180. The two are separate counts.

Treat every AI-attribution figure as a floor. A Token Runner compilation counted 93,116 employees affected by AI-attributed layoffs through 14 September 2026. That figure reflects the reasons companies reported, not the total number of jobs AI has replaced.

How exposed is the Saudi workforce to this kind of restructuring?

Saudi nationals make up 24% of the 12,420,050 GOSI (social-insurance) registered employees in the Kingdom. Of that total, 4,450,778 hold jobs with significant risk-weighted AI exposure, including 1,137,184 Saudis (SHIFT Observatory dataset, updated 21 March 2026). This measures exposure. It is not a forecast of job losses.

The five most AI-exposed sectors, out of the 20 we track:

| Sector | AI risk /100 | Employees | Saudi share | Nitaqat pressure | |---|---|---|---|---| | Administrative & Support Services | 72 | 1,420,733 | 17.4% | moderate | | Financial & Insurance Activities | 62 | 106,727 | 82.5% | very high | | Wholesale & Retail Trade | 55 | 1,827,205 | 22.3% | high | | Professional, Scientific & Technical | 52 | 291,530 | 47.2% | moderate | | Information & Communication (ICT) | 45 | 176,619 | 56.5% | high |

Wholesale & Retail Trade has the largest workforce of the five and the largest number of Saudi employees, about 407,467. In our reading, Administrative & Support Services is the sector closest to the work our 'suspected' label covers (back-office, IT support, basic operations). That is the label applied to Dell's cuts this week.

Retail cuts abroad and HSBC's earlier bank cut: what do they mean for Saudi sectors under Nitaqat pressure?

Banking appears in this edition only through an older case. HSBC announced 20,000 cuts on 19 September, which are outside this week's total. Reuters lists them alongside Kroger's as AI-linked or AI-associated reductions (17 October). Kroger is the week's only retail case.

In Saudi Arabia, Financial & Insurance Activities has the highest Saudi share of the five exposed sectors and very high Nitaqat pressure. Any AI-led restructuring there would therefore fall mostly on Saudi nationals. Wholesale & Retail Trade has the opposite profile: most of its workforce is non-Saudi, and it still faces high Nitaqat pressure.

Reuters coverage dated 12 October also describes companies moving spending from labour to AI capabilities and operational efficiency. In that coverage, AI is part of restructuring decisions, not only a product-development project. For sectors under high or very high Nitaqat pressure, we will track whether that shift in spending appears in the coming editions.

Frequently asked questions

Does 'AI cited' mean AI replaced those jobs?
Not necessarily. The Pulse uses three labels. 'Direct' means the company said explicitly that AI caused the cuts. 'Contributing' means AI is cited alongside other factors such as revenue, a change of strategy or a merger integration. 'Suspected' means automation is the evident driver, typically in back-office, IT support or basic operations, but the company has not said so officially.
What is Nitaqat?
Nitaqat Mutawar is Saudi Arabia's Saudization quota programme, set by Ministerial Decision No. 182495 of 23 May 2021. It places employers in bands: Red, Low Green, Medium Green, High Green and Platinum. Our sector data rates Nitaqat pressure from moderate to very high across the five most AI-exposed sectors.
What is the unemployment rate among Saudi nationals?
Unemployment among Saudi nationals stands at 7%, and at 14.8% for young Saudis. The figures come from the GASTAT Labour Force Survey (Q4 2024), Jadwa Investment's 2024 update and the NLO (May 2024).
How can I check the AI risk of a specific job in Saudi Arabia?
Our [AI Job Risk Dashboard](/career) scores 237 occupations, and each one has its own page, for example [accountants](/job/accountants). To apply those scores to your own situation, use the [Personal AI Risk Profile](/profile).
